What happens if an LEI code is not renewed?

An LEI must always be renewed annually in order for it to remain valid. If the LEI renewal is missed, the LEI number remains valid, but the status in GLEIS (Global LEI System) changes from "Valid" to "Lapsed". Further transactions are only possible again once the LEI number has been renewed and the status in GLEIS has been changed to "Valid". For these reasons, the expiry of your LEI number should be avoided at all costs:

  • Risk of breaching hundreds of LEI-related regulations.
  • Your data in GLEIS will show outdated identity information.
  • The records in the GLEIS are historical and remain in the database.
