How do I set up the outbound filter of EuropeanMX for my domain?

Due to security reasons we have decided to deactivate the outgoing filter by default. Please inform our support if you want to send your messages through our filter. We will be happy to activate it for you.

There are different ways you can send messages to our outgoing filter. In the following we will introduce the two most important methods:

A. Using a mailclient

The easiest way to use the outgoing filter is via normal user authentication in a locally installed e-mail program (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.). To do this, you must first create an outgoing user in the admin panel (if you have several senders, you need a separate outgoing user for each sender!). Click on Outgoing > Manage users and create a user (e.g. user@ihredomain.tld) and a password. You can also set the authentication method in the user details. We recommend the method Authentication User. You should also activate the option Automatic lock: to prevent unwanted misuse. Further information on creating an outgoing user can be found in our FAQ article "How do I set up an outgoing user?".

Please use the following outgoing mail server for the configuration in your e-mail client:

  • Hostname: smtp.europeanmx.eu
  • User: Your_mail_address
  • Password: Your_password
  • Port: 587
  • Authentication method: Password, unsecured

B. Using a mailserver

Alternatively, you can also set up a single user (with Authenticating IP, Authenticating User, Authenticating Domain) in EuropeanMX as an outgoing user via which all outgoing e-mail traffic from your mail server is sent. Most mail servers have a so-called smarthost function that accomplishes this.

If you prefer this option, you should deactivate the option Automatic lock: to avoid the entire server being blocked due to spam messages from a single end user. If you deactivate the option, all messages that are recognized as spam will continue to be blocked and reported to the administrator for review. Instead, use the option Lock identities automatically: to block potential spammers in your network. For more information on creating an outgoing user, please refer to our FAQ article "How do I set up an outgoing user?"

If you want to use the Smarthost solution, please make sure that you set the correct limit per user (based on your server). The hostname of our relay is relay.europeanmx.eu. Please ensure that you transmit your outgoing messages to EuropeanMX via port 587. If this is not the case, the messages will be rejected with the error message 550 Relay not permitted! and will not be sent.

Please note that our filtering cloud only accepts a maximum of 10 concurrent connections from your server. This ensures an optimal delivery speed. To prevent you from receiving the message 421 Too many concurrent SMTP connections from this IP address; please try again later. and to save the messages in the queue, the connection limit of 10 connections must be strictly adhered to.

If you use our outgoing filter for your messages, then you have to change the SPF entry in the DNS settings of your domain. This should look like this:

v=spf1 include:spf.europeanmx.eu -all

If you use any other servers to send your messages (such as newsletter tools, or similar), then add the servers to the aforementioned SPF entry.

Simply use our SPF generator to generate a suitable SPF record for your domain.
